Client

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) is the healthcare arm of the National Academies, and works outside of government to advise the nation on health improvement. 

Challenge

IOM produces valuable, highly sought-after reports which, under the existing architecture, were departmentally and categorically siloed. With much of IOM's research buried, content consumption was a one-way street that limited ability to cross-promote related reports.

High-level Project Goals:

  • Increase site traffic and visitor interaction
  • Improve content consumption
  • Align IOM's reputation with its digital presence

Solution: Faceted Search

The foundation of the new IOM site structure is a complex faceted navigation scheme that lets users filter reports by type, topic, and series. The experience is driven by custom coded metadata out of the Content Management System (CMS) Sitecore.

Project Results Included:

  • Implementation of Sitecore CMS and integration with numerous third-party applications
  • Custom JavaScript coding for a dynamic, interactive user interface that includes slide shows, tabbed interfaces, accordions, calendars, and font resizing widgets
  • Migration of 15,000+ individual pieces of content
  • A user-centered approach that satisfies needs for all key audience groups
